Shortlist study on offshore wind farms

When construction of the first offshore wind farms began, the ecological effects were largely unknown. The aim of the shortlist study is to answer the key questions concerning ecology in relation to offshore wind farms in order to fill the knowledge gaps.

Commissioned by the former Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture, and Innovation and the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment, this study was conducted by a consortium led by Imares and the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) (consisting of Bureau Waardenburg, NIOS, Seamarco and TNO).

The shortlist study focuses firstly on the distribution of species (birds, fish and marine mammals) and secondly on the impact on these species in relation to the construction and presence of wind farms. The study dates from the period 2010 – 2011.
