The EU Member States were required to submit their monitoring programmes to the European Commission by 15 October 2014.
The European Commission assesses whether the monitoring programmes for each marine region and subregion – the North Sea is one of the subregions located within the North-East Atlantic region – coherently constitute an appropriate framework for fulfilling the MSFD (Marine Strategy Framework Directive) requirements.
The European Commission will notify the Member States of its findings within six months of receipt of the monitoring programmes submitted and will advise them of any changes that they think necessary.
